Maui

Considered by many to be the best vacation spot on the islands, Maui is filled with valleys, beaches, mountainous forests, and open plains.

Known as the "House of Sun" in Hawaiian, Haleakala Crater here is the world's largest dormant volcano. You can camp and explore the crater's 32 miles of trails.

There are 16 golf courses on the island, mostly championship caliber and public.

Hawaii Nature Center reveals much about central Maui's Iao Valley in interactive exhibits. Bailey House Museum reflects 1830s Hawaii; Puunene is the A&B Sugar Museum.

Molokini, a tiny crescent-shaped islet off the south shore, is surrounded by a marine life conservation district, breeding ground for tame sea life that nibbles food from visitors' hands.

Maui's Hookipa Beach is considered the windsurfing capital of the world. Some prefer parasailing; others prefer to capture Maui's drama from an air-conditioned helicopter that swoops over mountain ridges and descends into hidden valleys.
